Ali-Akbari told IRNA that the film will address Imam Hussain's (AS) uprising against the corrupt Umayyad ruler.
He noted that it will be written by Davoud Mirbaqeri, and directed by Shahriar Bahrani, who is famous for making religious works such as the series ‘Saint Mary’ and the movie ‘The Kingdom of Solomon’.
Ali-Akbari said Iran’s Ministry of Culture and Islamic Guidance will be the main party that would secure the budget of the film, adding that other institutions have also expressed their readiness to sponsor the film.
According to his remarks, the film’s pre-production stage is expected to finish in six months.
He also expressed hope that the film will be ready before the next year’s edition of Fajr Film festival.
Imam Hussein (AS) was martyred along with 72 of his companions in the Battle of Karbala, in southern Iraq, on the tenth day of Muharram, the first month of the Islamic calendar, some 14 centuries ago after fighting courageously for justice against thousands of soldiers of the Umayyad caliph, Yazid I.
Each year, Shia Muslims commemorate Ashura, the martyrdom anniversary of Imam Hussein (AS), dressed in black and taking part in mourning rituals.
Ashura is the climax of 10-day mourning ceremonies that are observed in Muharram. The ceremonies symbolize the humanity’s struggle against tyranny and oppression.
